Some Tips For Balance Postures
Balance poses offer us a lot. Balance poses are not just about your ability to balance on one leg, there is a lot more at work in them. Not only do they challenge us physically, they also work our focus, concentration, patience, and breath. They canbe some of the most frustrating poses, as well as some of the most rewarding poses.
Here are some tips to make your balance poses flow a little more smoothly:
Fix Your Focus
In Sanskrit we call it a dristi, or gazing point. Not only does this help us to gain clarity and focus, but it helps to steady us
in sometimes wobbly balance poses.
Calm Your Mind
Balance is as internal as it is external. If there is chaos and distraction in the mind, it will transfer into the body and knock us off balance. I've seen it in practice, if you just stay calm and focused, your balance will be that much stronger. Try not to get frustrated if you fall, just come back, steady your focus and your breath, and try again.
Go With The Flow
Balance poses are not static. The breath is flowing, and the body is making constant adjustments, keep joints like the knees unlocked so those adjustments are available. When we try to grip or lock we are more likely to fall so ride the waves and wobbles that may come through you.
Take Your Time
Balance poses are ones to slowly and carefully move into. They also take time to achieve, so be patient with where you are, and let it come over time.
Have Fun
Don't worry if you fall, it's part of the process. When you fall you learn patience, and acceptance and you find your limits. Fall with a smile, keep breathing, have fun, and come back to it.
Balance poses are an analogy for our entire practice. We come to the Yoga mats to find grounding, centering, calming and balance. Balance poses are beautiful poses because they work us on all of those levels. If you can stay calm as you face a challenging balance posture, you can stay calm in any situations in life that try to knock you off balance as well.
