"When we decided to have a baby, my history of back problems concerned us. I started yoga to strengthen my back and core. Trevor was very patient and explained everything. He knows the history and anatomy of every pose, and made sure that I practiced them safely."

First Yoga of 2012

My First Yoga Practice of the Year

This morning I stepped onto my Yoga mat for the first time in 10 days.  I remember my teachers telling me how rest inYoga is important, and how your Yoga practice will have its ebbs and flows and times when it pauses for other things.  This year I had a 10 day pause for the holidays and my trip up to Oregon.  I kept it simple with some gentle and restorative poses, to ease my body back into practice, and to baby my body that has been battling a cold for 10 days as well.

It was an interesting exercise to approach this practice with an open mind.  I explored my body, the sensations it had, and tried not to analyze too much (which for my brain is a tall feat.)  I tried to just take myself as I am today.  I noticed certain movements and poses felt different than normal.  Not in a bad way but just in an interesting way.  I find myself thinking, "So . .this is how I start 2012, I wonder where it will lead me."  I've had many injuries, and stresses, and even emotional breakdowns the past several years where I have had to adapt my practice.  I feel like I am finally learning that the practice of Yoga is just that, a practice of adapting.  Life changes, years pass, we grow, we get sick, we get well, we injure ourselves and we heal.  This constant transformational quality of existence is one to explore and enjoy.

Sometimes it takes stepping back or away to see the bigger picture.  A pause in my practice helped me approach it again in a more delicate and careful way this morning.  I look forward to 2012 and what it will bring me in my practice, my life, and my work.
