This month we delved into the Endocrine System, a system that is complex and that medical science is still learning about. Basically the endocrine glands secrete hormones into the system which help to regulate many of our body functions. If the endocrine system gets out of balance it can really cause lots of problems. If glands work too much or too little they have big affects on our human system. What jumped out to me in our weekend studies on the endocrine system is its relationship with stress. All year I have been fascinated with stress's impact on the disease process. The endocrine system releases chemicals like cortisol or adrenaline during the stress response. These chemicals are good for the short term need of fight or flight, but can be damaging or get tapped out in the long run. In this day and age, stress is impossible to get away from. The key becomes using our Yoga practice to change ourselves inside. Learning how to cope with stress, and ultimately changing our perception of stressful situations. Through our Yoga practice we can calm the nervous system, and to stop the flood of stress chemicals replacing them with those that keep our functionality calm and regular.

At this point in our studies it is easy to see how all of our systems combine to make one cohesive human system. When the system is taxed or out of balance, disease and disorder abound. We need to find ways through Yoga to help regulate ourselves and keep the entire system in balance to better our health and our lives.
Next month . . . . addiction . . .
