Happy May everybody! With spring in full bloom and summer just around the corner it seems like everything is expanding and growing. Yoga is a great way to refine and make sure that our own personal growth moves in a positive direction. I feel my own journey moving in exciting ways. The more I learn about the healing aspects of Yoga Therapy the more my passion for this amazing healing art grows. I love to share that with you all as I do with this newsletter and the LMU Blog about my Yoga Therapy studies. I am also always available to answer questions or to work with you deeper on a one-on-one basis. Feel free to e-mail me or send me messages on Facebook, I always love to hear from you, and how this practice is growing with you in your lives.

Namaste

The In City Retreat from the City

Come join me for this day long event of Yoga, food, discussion, and fun. Treat yourself to a day of escape, right here in North Hollywood, practically your own back yard and literally mine! Come to my peaceful, private zen space and enjoy a day to take care of yourself, to rest, and to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. You owe it to yourself.

The nervous system is something that our Yoga practice can have a huge impact upon. There are the stories of amazing Yogis like Swami Rama who notably could control and stop his own heartbeat. We think that our autonomic nervous system is beyond our control, but there is evidence like Swami Rama to show that we could possibly have some impact on those bodily functions which are supposed to just be automatic. Our autonomic nervous system consists of 2 parts: the Sympathetic Nervous System, which responds to stress, it is our fight or flight response, and the Parasympathetic Nervous System which regulates daily activities and is responsible for our rest and relaxation response. Many of us live too much of our lives in a place of stress. Whether at work, or with family, or otherwise we are surrounded by stressors that put us into that Sympathetic nervous System fight/flight response. Through pranayama techniques (simply put, Yoga breath-work) we can tap into the Parasympathetic Nervous System and calm that stress response. Just observe it in class, as you focus on your breath in the first few minutes, notice your body starting to soften, your heart starting to slow, etc. These functions which we normally regard as automatic ARE being influenced by our breath, and our intentional focus. We are, on a smaller scale, doing what Swami Rama does when he controls his own autonomic activities. The implications of this have inspired me greatly in my Yoga Therapy work and studies. So many ailments out there have a connection to stress, so this ability to use our Yoga tools to put ourselves into the relaxed nervous system response is profoundly valuable. Stay tuned for next month, the female reproductive system . . .
